Volkswagen Golf/GTI wheels and rims

1110 designs fit a 1992+ Volkswagen Golf/GTI at stock height. Pick your year and trim and the list gets exact.

GTI fitment has one trap and it's the bolt. VW uses ball seat bolts from the factory and nearly every aftermarket wheel wants a conical seat, so your factory bolts are wrong for the new set even though the thread matches. Order bolts with the wheels, and rings too if the design needs them.

The rest of it's friendly. It's 5x112 from the Mk5 on. The bore's 57.1 mm, so most designs want a ring. Golf R cars carry a bigger front caliper and sit a class up. Front drive on the GTI and all wheel drive on the R both mean square sets, and rotation matters on a car that eats front tires.

Common questions

What bolt pattern is a Mk7 GTI
It's 5x112. Every Golf since the Mk5 uses it, along with the small Audis, so there's plenty to shop. The bore's 57.1 mm, so plenty of designs want a ring. Factory bolts are ball seat and most aftermarket wheels are drilled for a cone, so buy bolts with the set. The Mk4 and older Golf doesn't cross over at all.
Do I need new lug bolts for aftermarket wheels on a GTI
Yes, in almost every case. The factory bolt has a ball seat and your new wheels are drilled for a cone, so the two don't match. Mix them and the bolt clamps on a line instead of a surface, which is how wheels come loose. Length changes with the wheel too, so order bolts with the set and torque them to spec.
Will 18x9 +40 fit a Mk7 GTI
Tell us how the car sits and you'll get the answer for your exact trim. On a lowered GTI the front liner is the first thing to touch. Golf R owners want the R row instead, since that caliper is bigger and the choice narrows with it.
Can I run a staggered setup on a GTI
No reason to. The GTI is front drive and the Golf R is all wheel drive with a Haldex coupling, and both want four matching tires so you can rotate. Go wider at all four corners instead and you'll get the look without the headache.
