About Exhaust Systems

You're here for the sound, so let's start there. An axle back swaps the muffler and tips, goes on in an hour and changes tone more than volume. A cat back takes everything behind the converter, mid pipe and resonator included, so it's louder, lighter and a bigger job. Both stay legal everywhere because the catalyst doesn't move. Downpipes replace it and they're off road only.

Drone is the thing nobody mentions under the sound clip. A resonated cat back keeps a low hum out of the cabin at a steady cruise. A system without a resonator is louder everywhere and it'll wear on you across three hours of highway. A valved system shuts a flap at cruise and opens it when you ask for it. Stainless stays clean, and aluminized steel is the cheap road that rusts through first.

Fitment here depends on the body and the bumper cut out as much as the engine under the hood. A tip that clears a base valance can catch a sport trim diffuser, so every listing carries the trims it fits. Set the car and the trim up top and the tips you're shown will actually clear. When a system wants a hanger or a tip trimmed, we say so rather than letting you find out on the lift.

Common questions

Cat back or axle back
Axle back if you want a tone change without much outlay. Cat back if you want volume and weight gone. The axle back swaps the muffler and tips and it's an hour on stands. The cat back takes the mid pipe and resonator too, and that's where the drone and the weight are hiding. If your car has a loud factory resonator, the axle back won't get you far.
Will an exhaust add power
On a stock car, hardly any. The restriction on a modern car is the converter and the turbo, not the muffler hanging off the back. A downpipe on a tuned turbo car does add real power, because it frees the turbine up. Treat an exhaust as a sound and weight change first, and a power change only once you've touched the cat side.
Is a muffler delete legal
In most states, no, since a car has to have a muffler and meet a noise limit. A delete is a straight pipe where the muffler used to be, and it's loud, it drones badly and it fails an inspection anywhere they check. An axle back with a real muffler gets you most of the sound legally, which is why we don't sell delete pipes for street cars.
What does drone actually sound like
A low hum at a steady highway cruise that sits in the cabin and gets tiring after an hour of it. It shows up when the exhaust note lines up with a resonance in the body at the engine speed you cruise at. A resonated system, a valved one, or a Helmholtz resonator in the mid pipe all kill it. Maker notes on drone are on each listing, so you're not buying blind.
