Coilovers hand you the ride height you want instead of the one a spring kit already chose. Most of them add a knob to soften or firm things up once that height is set. The threaded body means you're setting it by the fender or by corner weight. Better kits move the lower mount so preload stays where the maker put it, cheaper ones slide the perch and change preload as they travel.
